Imagine
Cutting and coring experts and construction professionals require a reliable, non-destructive means to locate targets within concrete structures prior to drilling, cutting or coring. Additionally, it was recognized that many contractors needed a lightweight option that allowed them the ability to enter and leave jobsites easily. Our engineers were approached by an international firm with exactly these requirements.

Investigate
GSSI already led the concrete imaging industry with its suite of StructureScan products, the StructureScan Optical and the StructureScan Standard. The true difficulty lied in the ability to miniaturize all the components of the system, including; the control unit, GPR antenna, survey cart and encoder, and internal electronics. For several years, engineers researched state-of-the-art technology to recreate a full GPR system packaged in a small form factor.

Implement
At the World of Concrete in 2009, GSSI released the StructureScan Mini. The StructureScan Mini offered a 1.6 GHz antenna, ideal for a general concrete inspection application. The all-in-one system included the control unit, GPR antenna, 4-wheel drive, lasers for accurate location, and weighed only 1.6 kg (3.3 lbs). In 2012, GSSI released a 2.6 GHz high-resolution version, called the StructureScan Mini HR. Combined, these systems quickly became the standard in the industry.

Impact
Nearly 10 years after the release, the StructureScan Mini’s popularity around the world continues to grow. In 2016, GSSI unveiled the third generation of the system, the StructureScan Mini XT. Forward thinking in its design, the StructureScan Mini XT incorporates three accessory ports to allow for future expansion. Available accessories include a satellite Palm Antenna (2.3 GHz), LineTrac XT for AC detection, and an extension pole with six-button remote operation. With the third release, the StructureScan Mini Series is the #1 concrete imaging system in terms of units sold.
